You would have a hard time finding fans that are more into their sports than New York sports fans. These fans are widely known as being the toughest to please. They aren't content unless their favorite New York team is playing for the championship every single year. Ask somebody like one of the famous professional athletes who has left about it. These fans are really psychotic.
With better than average management the Giants have had a nice run in the playoffs in recent years. The fans have plenty to cheer about. The question about whether or not Eli Manning has what it takes has been answered. I just can't make sense of what the fuss is all about. They've got a well coached team that always ends up in the running come the end of the season.
Then New York has the lousy New York Jets. Jets fans have every reason to be angry at this football organization. The team let their best players go to other teams and then bring in a bunch of rookies. They bring coaching personnel in but don't keep them around long enough to develop anything lasting. I guess the mindset around NFL teams doesn't put much faith behind the term perseverance. If they did, you would see more teams building long term successful track records.
One other major controversial issue within the New York sports world is the beloved New York Yankees. With that much money being allocated to acquire baseballs best pitchers it is easy to see why fans get fanatical after a poor season. Sometimes there are increased expectations created when that kind of money is spent.
Some people choose to cheer for the other major New York baseball team. Mets fans don't need to worry about the things that weigh on Yankee fans. They are fans of a different caliber. The New York Mets are more consistent than their Yankee brothers. The fans know what to expect. They hope for a pennant but don't expect one every stinking year. Even though fans are excitable there is less whining involved than compared to the Yankees.
There are a bunch of hockey fans in the Big Apple as well. Fans have the Islanders and the Rangers to get excited over. For a New York sports team, neither one of those hockey clubs are consistently great. They have their up and down years just like any other hockey team. If NHL hockey became as important here as it is in Canada, I'm sure you would see some really huge budgets come out of both of those teams.
Basketball is big in New York. Like every other New Yorker, Knicks fans unrealistically wish the Knicks were playing for the title every year. Most years these guys are above average compared to other NBA cities. I suppose a explanation for that is the city's ability to attract people to move there. People, especially rich athletes, love to live in or near NYC. There are so many awesome benefits to living here. One of those benefits is having controversial sports teams to cheer for in every major national sport.
